Our Ugly World

The world has gone mad.  Or so I'm told.

I can turn on the news and come away with the impression that I am going to die at any given moment at the hands of some idiot with a grudge or some idiot with a God I don't believe in or some idiot that was bored.  I can log on to the internet and see pictures of dead kids, dead soldiers, entire dead villages.  I can find stories of child neglect, child abuse, and stories of infanticide. I can even watch as hundreds died when the building they were in fell in on itself.

It's an ugly world.  But it is no different than it's ever been.  It's no more mad than it was when witches were burned, blasphemers were stoned, or crucifixion was an acceptable from of capital punishment.  It's no more mad than when humans could be denied rights because of the color of their skin or the genitals in their pants.

Turn on the news, pick up a newspaper, or visit a news website and you can be reminded of just how ugly this world can be.  With the introduction of 24 hour news stations and the internet, all the bad news you want is just a click away.

It's an ugly world, indeed.

Tonight, as we sat around the dinner table, we enjoyed a good meal, a choice of three pies for dessert, and the usual Monkey family dinner conversation.  We poked fun at one another, ourselves, and this ugly world around us.  And we laughed.

Yes, it's an ugly world but it's filled with beautiful moments.  The trick is being aware of the former but not to the point of missing the latter.

  1. Sometimes, I have to take a break from the internet and the tv . I need to live in the not so ugly world. Like you said "life can be filled with beautiful moments".

    1. As a news junkie, I can become overwhelmed by all the bad news. When I feel it, I place myself on news lockdown. The only news I'll read is the weather. Taking time to enjoy my piece of the world refreshes me for my return to the rest of the world.

  2. If more people would see those beautiful moments and really appreciate them, the world would start being less ugly. When people take the time and really see how much good there is and how much is truly out there to be thankful for, they would be amazed at how happy they can be... I know I was.
You never know how powerful a simple smile can be until you are the one who sees it on the kind face of a stranger and your entire day is better because of it.

    1. One day I may write about some of the things that I love about this world and how easy it is to find your own if you want to.

  3. It is hard to watch the news some days and I've noticed now that the Lil man has taken an interest in current affairs, his attitude towards humanity is much more negative.
Thanks heavens for the things that still make us want to get out of bed in the mornings.

    1. I've had recent talks with my children about the world around us where I had to remind them that all the crazy shit they see on the news is just that, crazy shit. Yes, lots of problems in the world but the horrors of this world aren't as common as the (bad) news would have us believe.

  4. There will always be evil in the world, but the power of love is far stronger, and there will always be more good... we just have to turn off the media over-saturation and do exactly what you did... take time to listen to and enjoy one another. Laughter has the power to heal!

    1. It can be really easy to forget the good when we are so bombarded with tales of the bad. Sometimes I need to remind myself, and whoever else is listening, that the good is still there.
